Elimination of Vascular and Pigmented Irregularities

The information provided by Advanced Healthcare for Women and E. Daniel Biggerstaff, III, M.D. is for informational purposes only. The use of multiple laser wavelengths (colors) can reduce or eliminate sun damage, skin discoloration and small blood vessels. It is most often performed on the face and neck, but the chest, hands, arms, and legs can be treated as well.

Vascular and Pigmented Irregularity Therapy targets redness and skin discolorations. It is ideal for eliminating a variety of problems including:

  • broken capillaries
  • age/sun spots
  • rosacea
  • freckles

How does it work?

Laser light is absorbed by pigmented areas where it is converted to heat, causing a breakup in the pigment. In broken capillaries and spider veins, the laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in the blood and collapses the unwanted vein.

When will you see results?

Effects are cumulative. After the first treatment you will see improvements to broken capillaries, small facial veins and some pigmented areas within a few days. Other improvements will be more subtle and may take one to three months. Friends may suggest that you look more rested. With each subsequent treatment, subtle changes will accumulate until you have achieved the improvement you desire.

How often can you have it done?

A series of four to six treatments, spaced two to four weeks apart, is our standard recommendation. Occasionally, more treatments may be needed for certain individuals or conditions, while other conditions may require fewer treatments. Periodic maintenance treatments once or twice a year may be prescribed for optimal, lasting results.

Are there any side effects?

Immediately following the procedure you may experience some redness, swelling and/or a slight darkening of pigmented areas. The redness and swelling usually dissipate within one to three days; however, darkened pigmentation may persist, and the skin may peel lightly for up to one week. Makeup can be applied to the treated area immediately, if necessary. Additionally, hair growth may be impaired in the treated area, although it is not the intended purpose of this particular treatment. It is very important to wear SPF30 sun block and avoid sun exposure on a daily basis to reduce any potential side effects.

How long does it take?

This treatment takes approximately 5 to 60 minutes depending on the size of the area to be treated. Prescribed topical anesthetics should be applied 30-90 minutes before the treatment time if needed.
